Make space to prepare

Check the current Confession times at your parish or ask for an appointment. If it has been a long time, an appointment can give you space to explain that and ask for help.

Set aside a quiet moment beforehand. Ask God to help you see your life truthfully and respond with repentance. A trustworthy examination of conscience can help you reflect on your relationship with God and other people.

Reflect honestly and simply

Consider where you have chosen selfishness, dishonesty or harm, and where you have neglected a real responsibility. Avoid turning preparation into a comparison with other people. Focus on your own choices.

You can make brief notes if that helps your memory. Keep them private and dispose of them thoughtfully afterward. If reflection repeatedly leads to distress or compulsive checking, tell your confessor and seek appropriate support rather than adding more lists.

Ask the priest to guide you

At the beginning, say if you are unsure of the words or have not been to Confession for years. The priest can help you through the rite. Be honest and concise, and ask when you do not understand something.

The sacrament includes confession of sins, counsel and a penance, an expression of contrition and absolution. Follow the priest’s guidance; this short introduction does not replace personal sacramental preparation.

Respond with a concrete change

Afterward, take time to give thanks and complete the penance you were given. Consider one practical change that supports a better choice: a conversation, an apology or a boundary around a recurring temptation.

God’s mercy invites renewed love of God and neighbor. Continue to seek guidance when you need it, especially if personal circumstances raise questions you cannot resolve on your own.
