First Sunday of Advent

Gospel · Mark 13:33–37

Keep watch with hope

Jesus compares his return to a householder who goes away, gives each servant a responsibility and tells the gatekeeper to remain watchful. Since the hour is unknown, readiness belongs to every part of the day.

Bring it into ordinary life

Advent watchfulness is not fearful date-setting or constant alarm. It is hopeful attention to Christ and faithful care for the work already entrusted to us. A household can practise that attention in ordinary ways: pausing before the day begins, noticing who needs welcome, repairing a neglected responsibility or praying briefly when an Advent candle is lit. Choose one cue that can call everyone back to God this week. We prepare for Christ not by predicting his arrival, but by becoming available to love when he comes near.

One action this week

Let the Gospel take shape

Choose one daily cue, such as an Advent candle or mealtime, and pause together for one minute of prayer.

Pray together

Jesus, keep our hearts awake without fear. Help us notice Your presence, care for what You entrust to us and wait for You with steady hope. Amen.

An original prayer for personal and family use.
