Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel · Matthew 25:1–13

Keep a light ready

Jesus tells of ten young women waiting for a wedding procession. All become drowsy, but only five have brought enough oil to meet the bridegroom when he arrives. The parable calls for a readiness that cannot be improvised at the final moment.

Bring it into ordinary life

Christian readiness is not anxious guessing about dates. It is a life gradually made ready to meet Christ: telling the truth, returning to prayer, repairing harm and paying attention to the person who needs care. The lamps in the parable remind us that some habits must be practised rather than borrowed. Choose one small practice that keeps your attention turned toward God. If you have neglected it, begin again without drama. A steady flame is fed by ordinary faithfulness.
