Baptism is God’s gift of new life in Christ, not a reward for understanding everything first. The Church baptizes infants within the faith of the Church, with parents and godparents committed to nurturing that faith.

Baptism is the beginning of a life that needs to grow. Parents help through prayer, example, worship and ongoing formation. Practical preparation belongs with the parish; circumstances such as a child’s age or a previous baptism affect the appropriate next steps.

Contact your parish early. Ask about preparation, scheduling and what documents they need. Let choosing a godparent be a conversation about long-term faith and support, as well as family affection.
