Contact the parish early

Tell the parish office that you would like to arrange your child’s Baptism. Ask whom to speak with, what preparation is offered and which documents may be needed. Local arrangements differ, so confirm the details before booking a celebration.

If your family has particular circumstances or questions about practicing the faith, discuss them openly with the priest or parish team. A personal conversation is more useful than trying to work out your eligibility from a general checklist.

Give preparation room in your calendar

Baptism is one of the sacraments of Christian initiation. Ask the parish to explain what will happen in the liturgy and how parents will be supported in raising a child in the faith.

Write down practical questions: where to arrive, who will meet you and whether the parish has guidance about clothing, photographs or guests. Keep the focus on the sacrament rather than on planning a large event.

Talk about godparents with the parish

Before inviting someone formally, ask the parish about the Church’s requirements for godparents and any documentation needed. Describe the people you are considering and ask how their circumstances fit those requirements.

Think about who can offer a steady example of faith and stay connected to your child. Discuss the ongoing relationship, not only the role on the day itself.

Plan for the day and the days after

Pack the ordinary things your child needs and ask a relative to help with practical details. Let guests know the time and place clearly. A simple gathering afterward is enough.

Keep the baptismal certificate safely. Mark the date on your family calendar and think about a small annual remembrance: a prayer of thanks, a family meal or looking at photographs together.
